We’re thrilled to support two amazing charities at the 2020 Sewing & Stitchery Expo: Sew Powerful and Step By Step. You can support their causes by making a Sew Powerful purse or a tote bag or flannel crib blanket for Step By Step.
Both charities also need fabric for these projects! Feel free to clear out your stash and drop items off at the Charity Sewing Area in the Showplex. Please ensure the fabric is clean and in at least one-yard pieces.
Sew Powerful asks sewists to make the Sew Powerful purse, which is used to deliver feminine hygiene supplies to Zambian girls. When the girls receive their purse, they take the Sew Powerful pledge and promise to come to school all month long. You can support Sew Powerful by making a purse and bringing it with you to Expo, or sitting down in the Charity Sew area to create one on-site. Purses keep girls in school!
Step By Step needs handmade reusable tote bags, which care providers use to deliver essential items like diapers, wipes, blankets, and baby clothes to at-risk mothers in the Puget Sound region. This thoughtful gift helps moms know that they are not alone and have a family supporting them — every step of the way. You can support Step By Step by making a tote bag in advance and bringing it to Expo, and donating essential items like diapers!
You can make the Sew Powerful purse or a Step By Step tote (make your favorite, or this suggested pattern ) in advance and bring them to Expo, or you can sew on-site using the provided machines and notions, with guidance from charity leaders and our fabulous volunteers!
