Motherhood is hard, and every mom deserves to have a community supporting her. We’re here to help make sure all moms have something handmade, no matter what.
Step By Step helps at-risk pregnant women to deliver a healthy baby, embrace positive parenting, and establish safe homes and secure futures. For over 20 years, Step By Step has paired mothers with licensed nurses, counselors, and dietitians to address the unique challenges faced by at-risk mothers and their families. When essential items like diapers, wipes, blankets, and baby clothes are delivered in handmade reusable tote bags, it reminds moms that someone cares and took the time to make her something beautiful. This thoughtful gift helps her know that she is not alone and that she has a family supporting her — every step of the way.
Do you want to support Step By Step along with the Sewing & Stitchery Expo? There are several ways to participate!
Sewn Tote Bag
Step By Step is busy visiting moms and babies year-round, and they love to deliver much-needed items like diapers and baby food in beautiful handmade tote bags. Tote bags should be about the size of a reusable grocery bag, which are roughly 12″W × 13″H × 8″D. Bags should be made from cotton or another durable material. You can use your own favorite patterns, or one of these suggestions, below:

Tactile/Sensory Baby Toys
Blankets with tags or a simple stuffed animal can help teach children tactile and sensory skills! You can make your own favorite pattern, or use the suggested pattern below, from longtime Expo teacher and vendor Sheila McKay, from McKay Manor Musers. Sheila loves sewing for babies and children, and is thrilled to lend her pattern to support Step By Step!
